Hubert Smith Malone

Hubert Smith Malone, 96, of Roanoke Rapids, died peacefully at his home Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012.

Mr. Malone was a truck driver for the City of Roanoke Rapids, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from J. P. Stevens Company after 45 years of service.

He was born October 4, 1915, to the late Thomas Malone and Lela Harris Malone, and was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Dunston Malone; his sisters, Ida Moss, Pearl Ellis, Lillie Lee, Willie Mae Joyner, and Hazel Frank; and his brothers, Boyd Russell Malone and Thomas (Buck) Malone; also a grandson Jeffrey Hunsucker.

He is survived by his daughter, Norma ''Jeanie'' Hunsucker and her husband, John T. Hunsucker Sr. of Roanoke Rapids; his son, Gordon S. Malone and his wife, Pam, of Richmond, VA; three grandsons, John T. Hunsucker Jr., Brandon Malone, Bryan Malone; his granddaughter, Kelly H. Davis and her husband, Chris, of Rocky Mount; special granddaughter-in-law, Lisa Wade Hunsucker; eight great-grandchildren; special friends and caregivers, Bob and Faye Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22 at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 23, at Cedarwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The flag in front of the funeral home flies at half-staff in honor of Mr. Malone’s service to his country.
